Gig Review Britney Spears

23 03 2012

Here’s a review of the Britney Spears gig at the Odyssey that ran in the Big List a while ago.It was definitely an experience…

Gig Review

Britney Spears at the Odyssey, Belfast.

Tonight, in front of a three quarters full Odyssey Arena, wilting pop star Britney Spears arrives out onstage backed by a handful of dancers, a few big screens and, um, that’s about it really. Admittedly around half the crowd (who are all clad in rather fetching “It’s Britney, Bitch!” t-shirts) don’t seem too bothered that there is no live band-and perhaps more importantly-no live vocals, but the rest of us are left feeling a little bit let down by the whole affair, if we’re being honest.

Looking like the last decade has completely passed her by, everyone’s second favourite former slap-head (the first being James Nesbitt obviously…) lip syncs her way through the likes of ‘If You Seek Amy,’ ‘Gimme More’ and ‘Boys’ while giving the odd wave to the crowd and, rather ironically, only a cover of Rihanna’s ‘S & M’ really lifts the mood of a perplexed crowd who begin to head for the bar.

With her pop peers such as Lady Gaga and Katy Perry putting a lot of effort and money into their live shows, Britney’s Femme Fatale tour looks cheap and cobbled together in comparison and when she signs off with ‘Womanizer,’ after only arriving onstage an hour previously, this reviewer feels that a robber’s outfit would have been appropriate for her final costume change. Don’t call it a comeback. No really….don’t.

Foo Fighters make their long awaited Northern Irish debut at Day 1 of Tennent’s Vital. Last year’s phenomenal festival and arena tour was a huge commercial and critical success.

Most recent album ‘Wasting Light’ went straight to No.1 in 12 countries and was hailed as their best yet.  At the 2012 Grammys, Foo Fighters walked away with 5 awards, taking their all-time total to 11. Last month, they were also recently crowned ‘Best International Group’ at The Brits.

With a back catalogue featuring the massive anthems The PretenderBest of YouAll My Life and Everlong, and a frontman as iconic as Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters at Tennent’s Vital is essentially un-missable.

Guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach says of El Camino“where this record is going to shine for me is playing the songs live.  This record is more straight ahead rock and roll – raw, driving, and back to basics.”  We like the sound of that!

Headlining Day 2, The Stone Roses bring their much anticipated reunion tour to Tennent’s VitalThe Stone Roses’ seminal music defined an era and their eponymous debut album is widely considered to be among the greatest albums of all time.  Their pioneering fusion of soaring guitars and infectious dance rhythms can be seen on anthems Made Of StoneI Wanna Be AdoredLove Spreads and I Am The Resurrection.

The band’s long-awaited ‘live resurrection’ has thrilled fans across the globe. All 220,000 tickets for their 3 Manchester shows sold out in an hour and tickets for their date in Dublin’s Phoenix Park proved equally popular.

Iron Maiden ‘En Vivo!’

9 03 2012

This morning I received an advance copy of the new Iron Maiden DVD ‘En Vivo!’ Needless to say the excitement levels at Castle McFee are at fever pitch as a result.

Here’s the TV ad and the press release below.

EMI is proud to announce the release of a new live IRON MAIDEN Blu-Ray, 2DVDSet and Double Soundtrack Album on Friday March 23rd.

“EN VIVO!” was filmed on 10th April 2011 in front of over 50,000 ecstatic fans at the Estadio Nacional, Santiago during the Round The World In 66 Days legof The Final Frontier World Tour, and captures a magnificent performance by the band, ardently embraced by the legendary Latino passion and energy of their Chilean fans. With spectacular stage backdrops, dynamic musicianship and a literally jaw-dropping appearance by Eddie, this live show encapsulates to perfection the heart and soul of Iron Maiden 2011

Bass player and founder member Steve Harris comments “For The Final Frontier Tour it was really important to me that we filmed in South America as we’re always so overwhelmed by the fans’ reaction when we go to that part of the world and I wanted to reflect that in the filming. After much consideration we chose the Santiago show as we felt it was one of our best performances of the entire Tour and to play at the prestigious Estadio Nacional was a landmark moment for us. For reasons known to our fans,  it took a long time before we got to play our first show in Chile, and once we did get to play a show, the response was so phenomenal we just had to keep coming back and it’s got better and better each time!

This show also features the gigantic new Eddie. He wasn’t due to make his appearance until our European leg of the tour later in 2011, but we managed to transport him across the sea in a special huge container just in time for the latter end of the South American dates so it was great we were able to immortalize him for the DVD as he really has to be seen to be believed!”

The concert was filmed digitally using 22 HD cameras and an octocam (a flying camera which captures aerial crowd scenes), recorded in both stereo and 5.1 audio and mixed by Maiden’s longstanding producer Kevin “Caveman” Shirley, all of which serves to accentuate the incredible atmosphere of this compelling performance. Extensive use is made of split screens so fans can follow the individual members closer and the set list moves seamlessly between songs from Maiden’s most recent studio album, 2010’s The Final Frontier through to classic fan favourites via the band’s vast and varied catalogue .(full set listing below).

DVD Disc Two is a Bonus Disc containing an 88-minute documentary, BEHIND THE BEAST. This is also an entirely in-house production by Maiden’s own Krew, led by Andy Matthews, and is intended as an interesting and revealing high quality “home movie” for their fans of how to put on an Iron Maiden tour and what goes on behind the scenes at a show. It describes the extraordinary story of one of the most acclaimed and ambitious touring shows in the world. It illustrates the day to day life and complex tasks of the Maiden Killer Krew and the other characters behind the scenes. The expertise and experience, the problem-solving and successes, the sheer scale and immense difficulties of the undertaking comes to life through the day to day coverage of the tour and the background work of the crews in sound, lighting, carpentry, production and set design. As well as interviews with the Iron Maiden crew, it interweaves anecdotes from the band and their fans, and includes footage of the live show in this comprehensive guide to the intricacies of staging massive, live  Stadium shows around the World out of the belly of a Boeing 757. The bonus disc also contains an extended version of the promo video “Satellite 15…The Final Frontier”, a video about the making of “Satellite 15…The Final Frontier” plus the opening video sequence to The Final Frontier World Tour.

In addition to the Blu-Ray, the 2DVD will initially be available as a Limited Edition double DVD in Collectors Steel book case and Double Vinyl Picture Disc. As well as a traditional 2CD Soundtrack album, EN VIVO! will also be available as a Digital Download CD soundtrack album and Digital Download Video.

Maiden’s “Final Frontier World Tour 2010-11” saw the band circumnavigating the planet for the third time in their customized Boeing 757, Ed Force One, piloted by lead singer Bruce Dickinson, and playing 98 shows in 36 countries to over 2 million fans.

Metal Hammer Review: Therapy? ‘A Brief Crack Of Light’

7 03 2012

Occupying the middle ground between their sublime slice of lunacy Suicide Pact-You First and the critically acclaimed dark voyage that was 09’s Crooked Timber, A Brief Crack Of Light sees NI noise rock trio Therapy? delve further down the rabbit hole to deliver a potentially game changing opus. Their 13th album to date, tracks like Plague Bell and Why Turbulence? are typically thrilling salvos of primal concrete sledge that will no doubt appeal to those looking for some new neck bothering pit anthems, but the real short sharp shocks come in the form of the early Cure-esque, blissed out instrumental Marlow and the disturbing, unhinged sounds of The Buzzing. With the latter as ugly as the former is beautiful, both songs usher in a new era of musical adventures for the band and it’s one that many fans will want to join them on. Chilling space rock ballad Ecclesiastes is another curveball that we didn’t expect and it ends the album in a surprising, but utterly spell-binding fashion. [8]
