17 03 2011

A few years ago, my brother bought me the Loki mini-series (he’s awful good like that. If you talk nice to him he might buy you something too, but don’t tell him I said that). Featuring stunning artwork by Esad Ribic, who is not only an amazing artist but a great bloke to drink Guinness with (though that’s a tale for another time…) it was a big hit with the critics and now Marvel have made it into a film/cartoon. Here’s the trailer..

MTV EMA’s For Belfast

2 03 2011

I’ve heard mumblings about this for a while, so it’s good to see this fully confirmed and finally out in the open this morning. It should be a great night and hopefully we’ll get an amazing line-up for it. Here’s the press release…

Belfast and London, 2 March 2011: Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN), a division of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B), today announced that Belfast, Northern Ireland will play host to the 2011 MTV EMAs. Packed with unprecedented performances and appearances, the 2011 MTV EMAs will broadcast live from Belfast’s renowned Odyssey Arena in early November 2011 (date to be announced).

“Belfast’s vibrant nightlife and compelling music scene, known for fostering emerging artists and turning out international chart toppers, provides the perfect backdrop for one of the world’s biggest nights in music.  The spirit of Belfast combined with our expertise is the perfect foundation for an unforgettable event and unique night,” commented Antonio Campo Dall’Orto, Executive Vice President of Music Brands, VIMN.

David Lynn, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, VIMN UK & Ireland added: “Hosting the 2011 MTV EMAs in the UK is a tremendous opportunity to showcase the UK across a globe spanning portfolio of TV networks and websites serving in excess of 160 countries, while reinforcing our commitment to production in the UK. We greatly appreciate the support of the Belfast City Council and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and look forward to delivering an outstanding line up of events that capture the beauty and essence of Belfast.”

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Pat Convery, said: “It is fitting that the EMAs are coming to Belfast – one of Europe’s most exciting and vibrant cities and with around 35 per cent of our population below the age of 25. Belfast has a rich musical history and has produced artists such as Snow Patrol and the legendary Van Morrison and we now have an unprecedented opportunity to shine a spotlight on our musical heritage while also providing a major boost to our economy.”

“I am delighted that MTV has chosen Belfast. The decision to host such a world class event in our city is an endorsement of what we have been saying for some time now – Belfast is a happening place.”

Tourism Minister Arlene Foster welcomed MTV to Northern Ireland and said: “Playing host city for the MTV EMAs is a huge coup, not only for Belfast, but for the whole of Northern Ireland.  We are thrilled that Belfast will join the elite club of other leading European cities which have hosted these prestigious music awards.”

“Hosting the MTV EMAs will surely elevate Northern Ireland’s profile on the international stage.  I hope those who come to Northern Ireland for this spectacular event are inspired to explore more of what we have to offer for themselves,” she added.”

MTV also announced plans to host a series of local events around Belfast in the lead up to the EMAs.

Lisa Germano For Dublin

1 03 2011

There’s much excitement in McFee Towers today as I’ve just heard that one of my all-time favourite singers Lisa Germano is coming back to Ireland next month (April 27). I’ve been a huge fan of hers since the mid-90s and I think she has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard.

I’ve flown over to England twice to see her in the past and got to interview her a few years ago and her music is stunning live, so I can’t wait for the show. Anyway, sadly for some reason, not enough people know of Lisa’s music so here’s a video for ‘From A Shell’ and ‘Cry Wolf’ that EVERYONE reading this should listen to. If you like what you hear, pick up ‘Geek The Girl’ and Excerpts From A Love Circus’ as they’re essential listening.
